If you’ve spent months doing the same cardio or strength exercises, you may reach a point where you feel uninspired. It may be time to switch up your routine. Even a small change, such as taking a short walk each day, playing a sport or signing up for a new fitness class through your Y membership, can make a big difference.
Many people may not realize their current routine has plateaued. You may find yourself running the same jogging route or lifting the same weights without noticing any results. Here are some signs that indicate it’s time change up your fitness routine.
1. You’re Not Realizing Your Goals
People work out for many different reasons. You may be looking to lose weight or improve your endurance. However, if you don’t notice any changes over a period of time, it may be time to make a change. Our bodies adapt quickly, therefore, keeping the same routine for too long may result in minimal progress.
2. You Feel Uninspired
If your current fitness routine makes you feel bored or uninspired – you find yourself coming up with reasons not to exercise, or you begin skipping workouts – then it's time to make a change.
3. Your Current Routine Doesn’t Fit Your Current Lifestyle
Changes to your lifestyle should come with changes in your fitness routine. For example, if you have less time to work out every day, develop a routine that includes short, high-intensity workouts so you can maximize the time available.
1. Make It More Intense
If you feel your workout routine has plateaued, make it more intense. Increase the number of reps you take or shorten your breaks between separate reps. Also, consider using heavier weights or changing your body positioning. If you’re a jogger, try running a more difficult route.
2. Change the Environment
If you typically work out at the gym, a simple change like swimming or playing basketball once a week can refresh your routine. Dedicate days for in-gym workouts and others for outdoor sports and activities.
3. Take a New Class
Group exercise classes are excellent for spicing up your workout routine. Consider signing up for Zumba, aerobics or even aquatic classes. Working out in a group will give you inspiration from others, as well as new fitness ideas from your instructor. You may also find a new workout partner and challenge each other.
