You probably won't be surprised to learn health and fitness goals rank at the top of most New Year's resolution lists. However, statistics show less than 10 percent of people achieve these goals. 1. Set Specific and Attainable Goals
When you're on a road trip, you need to know where your destination is and how you're going to get there. Personal goals work the same way. Instead of "lose weight" or "eat healthy," aim for something more specific like "lose 10 pounds" or "eat meatless one day a week," and track your progress along the way.
2. Schedule Workouts
If you just fit workouts in when you "have time," the time will never come. Plan fitness center appointments as you would with any other commitment and set alarms to remind yourself.

3. Vary Your Routine
Do you find yourself gravitating to the same exercise style all the time? Mixing up your routine serves a dual purpose:
- Alternating workouts provides a greater challenge and prevents boredom
- Different types of exercise work different muscles, which results in well-rounded fitness while reducing risk of injury
Group fitness classes, such as yoga, weight training and water aerobics keep you engaged and motivated.
4. Keep It Fun
With so many forms of exercise available, there's no reason to stick to one you don't like. Keep trying new things until you find what’s fun for you. Fun is motivating, obligation is discouraging.
5. Picture Before and After
Our body image is influenced by factors such as emotion, mood and past experiences, so it doesn't always reflect reality. Take a picture of yourself at the beginning of the year and again periodically throughout your journey so you have an objective documentation of the improvements you've made.
