As the coronavirus spread, schools closed and clubs canceled all meetings – this means kids are spending the majority of their time indoors at home due to widespread stay-at-home orders. Unfortunately, the indoor lifestyle can be an unhealthy trap, primarily if your kids only focus on Zoom classes, computer games and social media. In these times, it’s crucial for you as a parent to find engaging activities that can take your children outdoors to keep them active and healthy.
Play in the Yard
Encourage your kids to step into the yard for some stretches and play. Your kids are safe in your yard since they’re still limited to your home. Ask the kids to take their toys outside and play in the backyard, instead of spending the entire day indoors. You can create a shaded structure if the sun is too hot. Let them splash in the pool or draw on the pavement with chalk.
Create a Routine
Creating a routine for the entire family is a great way to ensure everyone steps outside for a bit of exercise. The parents and other adults can create time outside their work schedules to play with the family. A firm routine also ensures your kids look forward to family time. You can play with hula hoops, play ball or introduce a trampoline in the backyard for the family to jump around on. A routine also guarantees your kids expend energy during the day and get better sleep at night.
Go for a Bike Ride or Walk
Not all play needs to be limited to your yard. Take your bikes out, and go riding together. Remember to keep your masks on and distance yourselves from others. You can also go for a walk around the block and set a family challenge to increase the miles every week.
If you live near hiking trails, take the entire family on a hike and interact with nature. Try and take photographs or carry your paint and pencils for quick sketches with the whole family.
Camp in the Backyard
Teach your kids how to pitch tents for the family and build a fire area. Bring out the sleeping bags and heavy throws and enjoy family stories over a fire. Take it a notch higher and roast some meat, sausages and marshmallows over the campfire, before retiring to the tents for some sleep.
Take Storytime Outside
Transfer all family story times outside. Ask the kids to pick out their favorite books, grab some outdoor chairs and sit outside. Alternatively, you can spread out mats and bring your blankets for story time.
